The wood violet was officially designated the Wisconsin State Flower in 1949, following the state’s Centennial celebration. “Badger State” residents have recognized the violet as a floral emblem since 1909. Wisconsin school children voted unanimously for the delicate bloom on Arbor Day, at the request of their Superintendent. Contenders for the honor included the wild rose, trailing arbutus (mayflower) and white water lily. In the end, the children felt the common wood violet best represented the scenic beauty of their state. Wisconsin’s wet climate and woodland environs are just right for the native wildflower, which thrives in moist and slightly shaded conditions.

Did you know the violet is the most popular state flower? Illinois, New Jersey, and Rhode Island are also represented by the low-growing-perennial. Wisconsin residents admired their state flower long before it was officially adopted. Images of the common wood violet appeared on a state stamp in 1848.

Rhode Island State Flower

The violet was designated the official Rhode Island State Flower in 1968. Rhode Island was the first of four states to choose the violet, but the last to formally do so. Rhode Island school children voted for the common blue violet over ten other candidates in 1897. However, the floral emblem wouldn’t be officially adopted by the state for another 71 years. During that time span, three other states–Illinois, Wisconsin, and New Jersey–adopted the violet as their official symbol.

The common blue violet is found primarily in the northern part of the “Ocean State.” Violets are easy to grow in gardens and also thrive in the wild. Outside city limits, the popular perennial is typically found in meadows, woods, and preserves.

New Jersey State Flower

The violet was originally selected as the New Jersey State Flower in 1913, but the choice was never made official. Fifty years later an attempt was made to correct the situation, but the legislation failed. New Jersey’s garden clubs forced the issue in 1971. Assembly Bill No. 2180 was passed, naming the common meadow violet as the official state flower. Thus, the “Garden State” joined Illinois, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin in honoring the violet as the official state flower.

There are more than 400 violet varieties. As you may expect, the common meadow violet is the most, well … common! The attractive perennial is native to eastern North America and is known by many names, including purple violet, woolly blue violet, hooded violet, and wood violet.

The violet was designated the official Illinois State Flower in 1908. The selection was entrusted to school children who narrowed their favorites to goldenrod, the wild rose, and the violet. More than 33,500 votes were cast. The violet received 16,583 votes, nearly 4,000 more than the second-place wild rose.

Blue-flowering violets are the most popular state flower. Four eastern states have selected the violet as their official state flower, and Illinois was the first to do so. With eight different species of violets growing in abundance throughout Illinois, the choice was a natural one.
