Kansas State Flower

The wild native sunflower was recognized as the official Kansas State Flower and floral emblem in 1903. The sunflower is featured on the Kansas state quarter and the Kansas state flag. Can you guess the Kansas state nickname? It’s called the “Sunflower State,” of course!

The legislature selected the native wildflower for its striking shape and conspicuous nature on the Kansas landscape. Proud Kansans recognize the historic symbolism of the sunflower, a common sight on winding trails and open prairies during the state’s frontier days. It was also believed that the cheery yellow bloom was well-suited to artistic reproduction. Indeed, artists of all ages have enjoyed portraying the sunflower’s glowing rays.
