California State Flower

The California poppy, also known as flame flower and copa de oro (cup of gold), was designated the official California State Flower in 1903. Generations of Californians have adopted the family tradition of driving to the open meadows during poppy season. Flower fields are one of the most common subjects in photography, as well as one of the most beautiful. California poppies share the stage with several other wildflowers including coreopsis, cream cups, goldfield, lupine, and owl’s clover. One of the most amazing sights in the “Golden State” is a field of brilliant orange poppies growing amidst a backdrop of bright purple lupines.

The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is a popular tourist spot during the blooming season. This usually occurs between mid-February and mid-May, depending on the amount of annual rainfall. The Poppy Reserve is kept in a natural state, which means the fields are not irrigated. There are eight miles of hiking trails through the poppy fields for visitors to enjoy. A paved section allows for wheelchair access within the reserve.
