Maryland State Flower

The black-eyed Susan was designated the official Maryland State Flower and floral emblem in 1918. The daisy-like wildflower echoes the yellow and black colors of the Maryland state flag. A member of the sunflower family, the cheery black-eyed Susan is a common sight in Maryland fields and roadsides. It grows easily with little attention, and is a favorite with nature photographers.

Baltimore, Maryland is home to Pimlico Race Course, most famous for hosting the annual Preakness Stakes. Maryland’s state flower is well represented during the festivities, which occur the third Saturday of May. The Black-Eyed Susan Stakes is open to three-year-old fillies and offers a purse of $250,000. Thirsty adults may be seen sipping a Black-Eyed Susan, the official drink of the Preakness. Each year the Preakness winner is covered with a blanket made from hundreds of black-eyed Susan flowers.
