Violet
Illinois State Flower
The violet was designated the official Illinois State Flower in 1908. The selection was entrusted to school children who narrowed their favorites to goldenrod, the wild rose, and the violet. More than 33,500 votes were cast. The violet received 16,583 votes, nearly 4,000 more than the second-place wild rose.
Blue-flowering violets are the most popular state flower. Four eastern states have selected the violet as their official state flower, and Illinois was the first to do so. With eight different species of violets growing in abundance throughout Illinois, the choice was a natural one.
